Khidmah, or service, is the spirit behind many activities in the Nahdlatul Ulama community. In the digital era, that service can be extended with technology: activities become better organised, information reaches the congregation more easily, and community businesses grow more easily.
Organising administration
Many organisations, local branches, and study circles still record members, activities, and finances by hand. Moving those records into a simple digital format, such as a shared spreadsheet or a data app, makes reports faster to prepare and makes handovers between committees easier.
Widening the reach of dakwah
Study schedules, lesson summaries, and event announcements can be shared through websites, social media, and WhatsApp groups. Live streams also help members who cannot attend in person. What matters is that content has clear references and is written courteously.
Supporting Nahdliyin small businesses
Product exhibitions at NU events show how diverse community businesses are, from food and crafts to Muslim fashion and farm produce. For these businesses to grow beyond exhibition season, they need a digital presence.
Bright, tidy product photos, which a phone camera can handle.
A WhatsApp Business catalogue and a Google Maps profile.
A marketplace store to reach buyers in other regions.
Simple sales records so the business is easy to evaluate.
The role of a vocational pesantren
A vocational pesantren can be the bridge: preparing students skilled at building websites, managing data, and marketing products digitally, then bringing those skills to nearby organisations and small businesses. That way, technology truly becomes a means of service.
